8th Mai: Liberation Day

Feature films and documentaries about the time around the end of the war in 1945

In various European countries, 8 May is considered "Liberation Day" and thus an important day of remembrance. It commemorates the day on which the German Wehrmacht and Germany declared to surrender unconditionally. This end of the Second World War also meant that Europe, the world, but also Germany itself were liberated from the brutal tyranny that called itself National Socialism. Our collection contains films that commemorate the end of the war in 1945 in a broad or narrow sense. In very different approaches, they address the time before, during or after the liberation - either in the form of atmospheric-emotionalising feature films or as documentaries that process the time as historical documents, recapitulate and analyse it.
