Martin Gschlacht

Between empathy and experiment: the brilliant cameraman (Silver Bear for "The Devil's Bath") is one of Austria's outstanding filmmakers

Between empathy and experiment: this is how the work of cameraman and producer Martin Gschlacht was once described in an article. Born in Vienna in 1969, Gschlacht studied cinematography and production at the Vienna Film Academy until graduating in 1996. In 1998, he founded his own film production company for short films, and one year later, together with directors Barbara Albert, Antonin Svoboda and Jessica Hausner, the Viennese film production company coop99, which Bruno Wagner has also been a member of since 2002. All are equal shares of the company's managing directors and producers. Gschlacht was represented in competition at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival with two films for which he was responsible for the camera work: "Women without men" by Shirin Neshat and "Lourdes" by Jessica Hausner. In the same year, he founded the Academy of Austrian Film together with other Austrian filmmakers. Gschlacht has been honoured with numerous awards for his work. The brilliant cinematographer recently received the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement at the Berlinale 2024 for the film "The Devil's Bath".
