Between Heaven and Earth

Drama/Thriller, Palestine/Luxembourg 2019

The journey of a Palestinian couple going through a divorce in a touching, deeply human drama

Salma (Mouna Hawa) and Tamer (Firas Nassar) are in their thirties and have been married for five years in the Palestinian territories. Now they want to get a divorce—which proves difficult not only emotionally but also in practical terms. Their journey takes them from the West Bank across the Israeli border to Nazareth, where they uncover a long-hidden secret from Tamer’s family’s past. In search of answers, they embark on an unexpected road trip that confronts them not only with the fault lines of history but also with their own emotions. Amid personal wounds, lost memories, and the political boundaries of their daily lives, a moving story unfolds about love, identity, and the way the past and present are intertwined. With “Between Heaven and Earth,” Palestinian director Najwa Najjar has created a sensitive drama loosely based on true events that intertwines personal relationships with the complex history of Palestine. With its unhurried narrative style and authentic portrayal of everyday Palestinian life, the film has been invited to numerous festivals and was nominated for the 2020 European Film Awards.
