Female fighters in male bastions

Women around the world are challenging patriarchal structures

"It's a man's world. But it would be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl." James Brown sang in 1966 about a world in which men create everything. 30 years later came Neneh Cherry's feminist cover version of "Woman" ("This is a woman's world... it's my world"). Another three decades later, the battle lines hardly seem to have changed. Many areas of life are still populated by men. In many parts of the world, equality and women's rights are not doing well, and in some countries they have even deteriorated significantly. Reason enough to take a closer look at women who are "standing their ground" at work or who are fighting as activists in regressive societies to ensure that other women can.
